A quick update of the time given to Dance2Learn from our recent holiday. 

A lift from our newest member, Omar Sohna, and help bargaining from Dija Cham meant that we were able to buy several "puss-puss"s (wheelbarrows!) of catering stuff for the project.

More to follow but here is a quick glimpse of what we did with your money :-)

D2L is returning to The Gambia in November 2021.

We're hoping to be able to "go shopping" for them while we are there to equip a kitchen area designed to help the local people to be able to make the most of their produce and preserve it for the times when there is less available.

ANY amount is welcome to help us to help them to help themselves!

The nets have arrived!

It's easy to forget that life's daily problems continue when we are all so concerned about Covid-19 but, according to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 120,000 people per year get malaria in The Gambia.
£5 buys a net, the price of a cheap drink.

With all the Covid19 restrictions, malaria is an additional complication that Gambian people face at this challenging time.

Since Dance2Learn can't get out there this year, we again teamed up with The Gunjur Project to buy 100 mosquito nets for the community at around £5.00 ($8.00) each

​Seeing the Wakawaka lights charging on the roofs of the compounds and then meeting the people whose lives have been radically changed by having free, safe light after sundown; women who can take care of their babies, businesses that can continue to operate and most poignantly, the kids who can study safely, without breathing in the fumes of kerosene or having to wait until they can afford a candle... priceless! 
£15 buys a light that will serve around 9 people for at least 10 Years!! £500 provides safe, free light for around 300 people for 10 years! £1500, nearly 1000 people! etc... With even more we can build a classroom!! then visit us on Facebook.

 I usually make a point of keeping the Gambia pics happy and positive and Dance2Learn posts light and encouraging.. The smile on this gentle man’s face is no exception… but let me tell you a little about him.

This is Augustus. A very shy, gentle and smiley man. He also has polio, which he developed as a 5 year-old child.

Every evening, after the bumsters, traders and majority of tourists have left the beach, Augustus drags himself from his shack across the roads to the sea at Kotu.

He pulls himself along the beach for around a mile, where local fishermen give him a small share of the little they have. He can’t carry anything, so any food he receives has to be eaten in situ. We gave him a note. His arms are so weak and hands so feeble that he couldn’t tuck it in the small pouch he carries around his neck on his own.

It was a fortune, 100 Dalasis, somewhat short of £2.

We sat together for quite a while. We played “who is the most handsome” using the camera. His laughter was infectious.

I asked him if there was a special someone at home. “Yes”, he replied, “my mum.”.

He’s never been to school, it would be impossible to pay for or even get to for him. He has little or no physical contact (for fear of “infection”), he moves by dragging himself along. Augustus is 38.

We sat together, laughed and shared some time. He made me smile.

Later that evening, I cried, as I am now, I could never be that strong.

I feel I need a new direction with Dance2Learn, maybe not as glamorous as “bringing light” but I need to do something.

Augustus, the even camera shows, you win hands down on the Most Beautiful Soul, maybe you will spark a new direction.

Rather a moving day, on so many levels! Not least was knowing how many of you contributed from the kindness of your hearts to celebrate and share in the life of a truly wonderful Little Welshman, Presley Cariadus Cholwyn, my darling puppy.
