Dance2Learn News
Helping others to help themselves.
At last the photos from our recent trip to The Gambia to see the results of the Bring Home the Light Project are here! If you look closely, you can see the Wakawaka lights charging on the roofs of the compounds.
As well as these, there are images of one of the schools that The Gunjur Project Association are involved with as well as photos of the Project itself. Click here to enjoy some smiles from those less fortunate than ourselves! We're back from our latest trip to The Gambia with some great news and photos of the Waka-Waka lights in action. It's just a matter of sorting through the thousand or so pictures and videos in order to be able to post a visual report of the successful end of this first part of the project.
In the meantime we'd like to thank Jo Austin-Preece and all the volunteers at the Gunjur Project as well as Beppie Smits of Globergy for their invaluable help and support. More coming soon! Watch this space ;-) Dance2Learn would like to thank the fabulous people at KROMARK for their wonderful generosity!
We took delivery of these swanky T-Shirts today. KROMARK sent them to us as a donation! They will soon be seen over in The Gambia when we go to check out the finalisation of the "Bring Home the Light" project. Their products are of high quality and they take great care to ensure the products are exactly as you ordered them and expect. The staff and communications are superb, friendly, attentive and quick to reply to queries! Check them out here. Thanks again KROMARK (and Jazz in particular for her patience!) The Gunjur Project has now accepted our offer of eye surgery (see here) to be carried out with the proceeds from the subsidised sale of the WakaWaka lights in November last year. A full report will follow... Meanwhile, here are some heart-warming stories from some of the people who have received treatment so far. Big thank yous and kudos to all those who have helped achieve this! Following our poll at http://dance2learn.weebly.com/lights-reinvestment.html , results are in.
It seems the majority were in favour of the eye surgery: "Eye project. We have had several visits from opticians who have given free eye tests and donated glasses for those that required them. Some were found to need surgery for cataracts and other eye conditions. We have started a fund to pay for these people to get the operations / drugs that are required at a very good Gambian hospital. It costs approx. £40 to give this gift of sight. A report on this project as required. " We will be informing The Gunjur Project and look forward to hearing the report! :-) Here's looking at you! Dance2Learn would like to thank OrangeHost for giving us a good deal on our hosting after a recent change. We will save a considerable amount which can, instead, be used to fund projects! As a courtesy to them, here is their advert (savings to be made for anyone!) Further info on their page at http://www.orangehost.in/
The lights arrived at their destination near the end of 2015 and distribution was arranged by Gunjur Project.
To qualify, the applicants volunteered for a day at the project, then they earned the right to buy a WakaWaka (at massively subsidised prices). This money is now to be reinvested in a new project in situ. The possibilities were sent to us and can be found by clicking the picture below. Then please feel free to leave your comments at our facebook page FB: dance2learn or below. After nearly 6 months break, The Potter's in Newport are giving SalsaSource a 4 week trial run for Salsa Classes as of 15 March 2016! If we get enough support, this is likely to be ongoing. This is also great news for The Gambia as the funds raised go towards helping to run the Dance2Learn! This means that if you've been thinking of "giving it a go", NOW is your chance! Don't put it off till the next week, show your support now and let's get Salsa back in the Heart of Newport! At around £2.50 per hour, the classes begin at 7.30 sharp with a beginners and refreshers session. then 15 minutes free dance till the intermediate class at 8.30. There will be some time after for a little more practice and social dancing. There will be introductions to Bachata, Cha-cha and Meringue and these can be taught in the second class by request. The cost is £5 for either or both, so why not stick around and stretch yourself a little, or come early and help out with the newbies? We guarantee you'll be dancing after the first night! Event on FB HERE BETWEEN JANUARY 4TH AND JANUARY 10TH |
